TARTU  Maarja school is an educational institution for children with special needs. Some are able bodied, but need secluded safe areas to wear off their energy, some are in a wheelchair. Nevertheless what kind of special needs the children at that school have, they were in a need of a renewed play and sports area. The project area is located next to their scool, separated wit a fence. They already had a playground, a path to walk or jog on, benches and a sports area. However it needed to be refreshed and changed up.

After having discussions with both the client (the city) and the teachers of the school it was clear what was needed from the landscape architect. A fenced area for children with amazing physical abilities to climb, jump, hang off thigs; a path much like the existing one, but with EPDM cover so the muddy seasons would be bearable as-well; EPDM cover on the sports area for the same reason- much cleaner; a pergola area for outdoor classes; fixing up the cover in the existing outdoor class; adding more swings and more.

We also had a idea to collect rainwater from the roof of the most near builing and guiding it to the playground so it would be possible to have fun water and mud play.
